ImaB-Edge

Intelligent, multi-modal, self-sufficient building inspection by means of edge computing

The Challenge

Civil engineering structures like bridges, sewage treatment plants or dams are essential elements of infrastructure and therefore highly relevant, both logistically and economically. At the same time, conscientious maintenance is crucial to maintain public safety. There are numerous approaches to resolve the issue, either resulting in high staff or material costs or the need for significant cloud memory. The increasing number of connected devices and sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), allows for many diverse and innovative applications but produces a rapidly growing amount of data.

The Project

As an alternative to existing solutions, this project aims to develop a modularly customizable on-site system (“ImaB-Edge”) specifically for predictive maintenance of critical infrastructure. The processing of data at their place of origin (edge computing) assists with handling them efficiently and strengthens functionality, reliability, sustainability, and economic efficiency of electronic appliances by means of networking and artificial intelligence. Operators of infrastructure, building material research and test facilities, hardware and software developers and construction companies are working towards a complete system solution for monitoring critical infrastructure. In addition to highway bridges, critical conditions or significant changes in railroad facilities, tunnels, dams, etc. are to be detected at an early stage so that appropriate measures can be initiated.

Our Contribution

We at microsensys are happy to contribute our application-specific know-how for developing robust sensors for condition monitoring in challenging and diverse environments and demanding places (concrete, asphalt, etc.) and producing hardware for precise, continuous measurements. Data can then be collected at a central point for later assessment and analysis by artificial intelligence, making sure service teams and providers can keep track of every building’s condition to act informed and in time. Benefiting from our easy-to-read and durable technology, we will focus on pattern recognition within the sensor data to derive the current and future behavior of structures: precise values for predictive maintenance.
